CYPROHEPTADINE (Periactin) is an antihistamine. It relieves symptoms of hay fever (seasonal rhinitis), hives (rash or itching), inflammation of the eyes (pink eye, allergic conjunctivitis), and other mild allergic conditions. Generic cyproheptadine tablets are available.

Periactin is a popular drug that has been labeled as an antihistamine. Such medicines are known to act by blocking some of the effects that are produced by several naturally occurring histamines (a sort of chemicals) in the patient’s organism. A treatment with this product is known to effectively treat common cold or allergy symptoms such as runny nose; sneezing; watery eyes; itching; rashes; hives and so on. Although the FDA has not yet tested this drug’s effectiveness in the case of underweight patients who need to stimulate their appetite, some doctors are known to prescribe Periactin under special circumstances.

Cyproheptadine belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines.

Histamine is released when the body responds to an allergen (e.g. pollen, cat hair, bird feathers. It binds to receptors (H-1 receptors) causing a range of effects, including, widening of small blood vessels in the nose and eyes and contraction of the muscles of the gastro-intestinal and respiratory tracts. These effects are responsible for the characteristic symptoms of allergies(such as inflammation of the skin, airways or tissues, rashes, itching of the skin, eyes or nose, nasal congestion or narrowing of the airways).

Cyproheptadine blocks the action of histamine on H1 receptors, thereby relieving the symptoms of allergic reactions.

Cyproheptadine is also used in the prevention or treatment of migraine headaches. It is not fully understood how it works in this condition. In addition to blocking the actions of histamine, it blocks the action of a chemical in the brain called serotonin. These chemicals are involved in migraine.

Cyproheptadine is called a sedating anti-histamine as it enters the brain in significant quantities and is therefore more likely to cause drowsiness than the newer group of non-sedating anti-histamines.

Periactin Indications

Periactin is a well known antihistamine that is generally prescribed to treat some of the most unpleasant (but very common) symptoms that are triggered by the common cold or by an allergic reaction. This medicine can sometimes be prescribed to underweight patients in order to stimulate their appetite. However, this antihistamine could also prevent or treat some other medical conditions that have not been listed in this guide. What side effects may I notice from taking cyproheptadine?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•agitation, nervousness, excitability, not able to sleep (these are more likely in children)
•blurred vision
•dizziness or fainting spells
•irregular heartbeat, palpitations, or chest pain
•pain or difficulty passing urine
•seizures (convulsions)

Minor side effects from cyproheptadine include:
•drowsiness, dizziness
•dry mouth
•headache
•loss of appetite
•stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea
